The historic mansions of 19th-century millionaires from Boston and New York are now museums, inns and performing venues. Chesterwood, with its beautiful gardens, and The Mount, where the novelist Edith Wharton designed wonderful interiors, are 2 of the best to visit.

The Berkshires are also a haven for culture. Top museums include the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams. Meanwhile the famous summer concerts of classical music bring audiences from far and wide. They take place at Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. From Jun-Aug, the Williamstown Theatre Festival adds even more cultural appeal.

The Shakers originated in Manchester (Manchester, England, that is) in the 18th Century. Visit the Hancock Shaker Village and you'll be amazed how many of today's well-known furniture designs were invented by this peace-loving community. Out in the countryside, simple pleasures include walking and mountain biking in the hills, and dining in the region's many inns and restaurants.

Eats & drinksEats & drinks

The Berkshires' status as a destination for the discerning means you'll find top dining in the many inns. Seasonal, regional dishes are popular, as well as international cuisine.
