Destination information
Bordering Canada in the north and the Atlantic nearly everywhere else, the glorious coastline, for which it is justifiably renowned, is so craggy that if you stretched it out straight it would run for 3,000 miles!
Many of the best beaches can be found in the southern coastal towns, the most famous of which is the 7-mile stretch of sand at Old Orchard Beach. It's one of the finest in the US and together with the pier, adorned by classic amusement park rides such as the Ferris wheel and dodgems, this resort is classic New England!
Further north are the pretty coastal resorts of Boothbay Harbor and Sebasco where traditional Maine pastimes such as sailing, fishing and lobstering are popular. Maine is the world lobster capital - stop at a lobster pound and eat it freshly caught.
Other picturesque coastal towns in Maine include Kennebunkport and Ogunquit. In the former you can visit the Seashore Trolley Museum and take a trip on the lovely 20-min vintage trolley ride which goes through the Maine woods - look out for moose which live here!
Eats & drinks
We've mentioned lobster, but clams are also a speciality together with grilled seafood in general. All in all, there's no shortage of places to eat in and around Maine with every nationality represented.
